WASHINGTON – January 16, 2023 – The Short Line Safety Institute and University of Connecticut kick off the League of Railway Women’s Webinar Series with a research talk about gender diversity and safety culture. Julia Leone, PhD and Samantha Lacey, M.S. discuss the benefits of increasing gender diversity in the transportation industry, including increased performance and innovation. They also explain how this could have an impact on workers, railroads and society at large. Leone outlines the next steps for increasing data collection and availability for gender diversity in the rail industry. These include increasing access to data for research purposes, providing training and marketing materials to managers, and promoting management training to promote safety messages.
