The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) offers the short line and regional railroad industry assistance in practicing an emergency response to a hazardous materials incident on your railroad.

This program educates small railroad management teams on working within the Incident Command System (ICS), structuring their team to handle an incident. The exercises allow railroaders to apply their knowledge of the hazardous materials regulations (HMR) to real-life scenarios of actual or potential hazardous materials releases. SLSI staff facilitates problem-solving discussions among the railroad leadership team in an open, no-fault environment.

Working alongside your team, our experts will walk through your Railroad Emergency Response Plan and discuss best practices for reporting and responding to an incident. Following the evaluation, planning and process improvement opportunities will be identified to help mitigate risk.

Proven practices in employee safety, organization preparedness, utilizing the Incident Command System, and working with the media and the public will be covered.

Make sure your entire team is prepared to manage a Hazardous Materials incident!

Through a grant from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), this program is available at no cost to the requesting short line or regional railroad.

Invite our team of experts to practice your railroad’s emergency response.
